Short-Term Memory
Short-Term Memory is the median between sensory and long-term memory. It lasts between 10 and 15 seconds without conscious effort to remember it and has a capacity of around 7 items. Short-term memory is used to store information necessary to complete a task, such as reading a sentence and not forgetting the beginning of it. Several techniques can be used to retain information from short-term memory into long-term memory, such as chunking, the grouping of information, and rehearsal, which is the repetition of the information either out loud or in one's head.
